The sizes mentioned above may confuse the non-technical so the key things to consider when selecting the correct nut for your applications and avoid disappointment after purchasing to find out you have the wrong , type, size, diameter etc.

So for the non-technical and to save confusion the simple solution is to take your nut to a hardware store (Bunnings) and use their nut gauge board provided in the nuts and bolt section to source the correct information and your transaction will be trouble free.

How Is a Nut Measured?

Type = Metric, nut size is prefixed with a Mx where x is a numeric number in millimeters ie M10 = 10mm
            Imperial, nut size is labelled UNx where x is the thread type ie: “F” for fine and “C” for coarse

Standard  = M Metric , US standard UN

Pitch / Thread = Thread Count (TPI) stands for Threads Per Inch. This is the number threads per inch measured along the length of a bolt. TPI is used only with American nuts. Ie 20 TPI
Metric nuts are specified with a thread pitch instead of a thread count. The thread pitch is the distance between threads expressed in millimeters. For example a thread pitch of 1.5 means that the distance between one thread and the next is 1.5mm.

Diameter = Outside Diameter (OD) measured in millimeters and is used to select the tool.
Inner Diameter (ID) is for the Blots size also measured in millimeters.
